HOUSTON—Former presidents, officers and special guests were recognized July 15 at the 64th Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.
LCMS President Dr. Gerald B. Kieschnick introduced Dr. Robert Kuhn, who served as LCMS president for six months following the death of Dr. A.L. Barry in 2001. Kieschnick also noted that Dr. Ralph A. Bohlmann, president from 1981-92, earlier attended the convention but returned home due to illness of a family member. Also introduced was Rev. Daniel Preus, who previously served as first vice-president of the Synod and was elected fourth-vice president at this convention.
The convention is meeting July 10-17 at the George R. Brown Convention Center under the theme “ONE People—Forgiven.” Among the approximately 3,000 participants are some 1,200 clergy and lay voting delegates.
Special guests included Rev. Franklin B. Hays, presiding pastor of the American Association of Lutheran Churches; Rev. James Pope, a member of the commission on inter-church relations of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod; and David Swartling, secretary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Four men are representing partner churches: Rev. Marky Kessa, president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Haiti; Rev. Revenel Benoit, president of the Lutheran Church Haiti; Rev. Robert Bugbee, president of the Lutheran Church—Canada; and Dr. Walter Obare, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya.
