Delegates continue work on Floor Committee 8 resolutions

HOUSTON—Delegates continued voting this afternoon on the resolutions proposed by Floor Committee 8, Synod Structure and Governance.

Resolution 8-17, to allow congregations to elect the president of the Synod was adopted, with an amendment, 749 to 419. The amendment established a two-month time frame prior to the election for information about the candidates to be shared with congregations.

At present, delegates to the national convention elect the president of the Synod.

Congregations would decide among three candidates for the office who received the highest number of nominations.  Four weeks prior to the start of a national convention, their two district delegates would submit their votes for a candidate directly to the secretary of Synod.  If no candidate receives a majority, a second ballot for the top two candidates would be held.  Results of the balloting would be announced two weeks before the convention’s start.

The amendment to the resolution established a two-month time frame before the election for information about the candidates to be shared with congregations.  The adopted resolution takes effect at the 2013 national convention.

A substitute amendment that would have allowed congregations to elect members of the Synod’s Board of Directors was defeated.

The 64th Regular Convention of the Synod is meeting July 10-17 at the George R. Brown Convention Center under the theme “ONE People—Forgiven.”
