Call for nominations: president, Concordia University Irvine

Concordia University Irvine, Irvine, Calif., seeks nominations for the position of president.

The president is the chief executive officer of the university and serves as the college’s spiritual, academic and administrative head. The official functions of the office of the president are described in the 2016 LCMS Handbook, section 3.10.6.6.

The following qualifications are required of all nominees:

  • Be a member of an LCMS congregation, faithful to the Scriptures as the Word of God and to the theological doctrines of the LCMS.
  • Possess a powerful affinity for and commitment to the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of the university.
  • Possess an advanced academic degree and be committed to Lutheran higher education.
  • Be a mature Christian with a vibrant faith who regularly receives the Means of Grace.
  • Demonstrate a passion for the Great Commission and the sharing of the Gospel worldwide.
  • Possess a deep commitment to the highest standards of academic excellence.

The following qualifications and characteristics are desirable:

  • Demonstrate decisive leadership that also values transparency, collaboration and collegiality.
  • Be a visionary leader with the ability to energize and inspire students, faculty, staff, families, alumni, regents, trustees and external stakeholders, and be able to lead and collaborate with an administrative team to manage a complex academic institution.
  • Be an effective and engaging communicator with the ability to articulate complex ideas in both written and oral forms.

According to Bylaw 3.10.6.6.2.b.3 of the 2016 LCMS Handbook, nominations may be accepted only from LCMS congregations, the Concordia University Irvine plenary faculty, the Concordia University Irvine Board of Regents, and the Concordia University System Board of Directors.

Executive director, LINC Ministries

LINC Ministries Int’l, Inc. (LINC), Houston, is seeking an executive director to serve as its key visionary leader.

The executive director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing and outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors via the Board Policy Manual.

General responsibilities:

  1. Board governance — collaborates with the Board in order to develop and fulfill the organization’s vision and mission, with responsibility for:
  • leading LINC in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission and desired outcomes as defined by the Board of Directors. 

  • communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.


2. Financial performance and viability — develops and manages resources to ensure the financial health of the organization, with responsibility for: 


  • the fiscal integrity of LINC, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and status summary of the monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization. 

  • fiscal management that operates within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position. 

  • fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support LINC’s mission and outcomes. 

  1. Strategy — works with Board and staff to ensure desired outcomes are fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and outreach, with responsibility for: 

  • implementation of LINC’s programs that carry out the organization’s mission. 

  • strategic planning to ensure that LINC can successfully fulfill its desired 
outcomes into the future. 

  • the enhancement of LINC’s image by being active, visible and working closely with other ministry, professional, civic and private organizations. 

  • serving as LINC’s primary spokesperson for the organization. 

  1. Personnel and operations — oversees resources and implements practices to ensure operations of the organization are lawful and appropriate, with responsibility for:
  • effective administration of LINC operations. 

  • hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff. 

  • the execution of all notes, agreements and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization. 

  • shepherding LINC pastors, missionaries and staff.

Professional and personal qualifications:

  • baptized Christian, confessing Jesus Christ as Lord. 

  • rostered Minister of Religion—Ordained in the LCMS, eligible to receive a call.

  • demonstrated visionary leader.

  • transparent and high-integrity leadership. 

  • five or more years senior nonprofit management experience desired. 

  • budget management skills including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting. 

  • strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation. 

  • ability to boldly convey a compelling vision of LINC’s strategic future to staff, board, volunteers and donors.

Special Collections Librarian, Concordia Seminary

Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, serves church and world by providing theological education and leadership centered in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ for the formation of pastors, missionaries, deaconesses, scholars and leaders in the name of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Concordia Seminary is currently engaged in a search for a full-time Special Collections Librarian to work in its Library Services Office.

Position summary:

Responsible for identifying, recommending, cataloguing, processing, curating, promoting and providing assisted research access to the special collections of the library (microforms, rare books, art, etc.). Spearheads the library’s efforts to digitize and make publicly available its rare book holdings.

Responsibilities and characteristic duties:

  • Look for, and recommend for purchase, special collection titles relevant to the library’s collections, curriculum and research purposes.
  • Enter descriptive cataloguing/classification of special collections materials into the library catalog according to Library of Congress standards.
  • Process items entering the collection, including bar coding, ownership marks, call number and any appropriate protective measures/enclosures.
  • Curate the special collections, monitoring condition, recommending repairs and recommending titles/items for withdrawal from the collections.
  • Collaborate with faculty to bring students into contact with primary sources and other significant items in the rare book collection.
  • Promote the library’s special collections to the campus community, the Lutheran community, the theological/academic library communities and the larger public.
  • Provide special collections research assistance to students, faculty and visiting scholars.
  • Oversee the library’s digitization operations with respect to its special collections, including selection of materials to be digitized, maintenance of standards in digitization formats and procedures, and metadata for images made publicly available.
  • Lead negotiations with internal or external entities regarding the loan of special collections items (for special exhibits, etc.).
  • Conduct presentations to tour groups regarding the library’s special collections.
  • Work collaboratively with other library and/or seminary staff, particularly in the areas of promoting the collections, coordinating with other electronic/digitization efforts within the library’s operations, and intra-staff communication.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate would have the following:

  • Masters-level library science degree from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Demonstrable skills in decision-making, communication, teamwork and ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Functional knowledge of various aspects of special collections librarianship, including descriptive cataloging of early printed materials.
  • Knowledge of at least German and Latin, with ability to read Fraktur typeface and ornate fonts used in early printing (ability to read early manuscript helpful).
  • Ability to supervise student workers with respect to special collections.
  • Working knowledge of US Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC), Library of Congress (LC) classification system, and standard cataloging and library software such as BookWhere, LC Cataloger’s Desktop, Classification Plus, OCLC Connexion.
  • Ability to search in catalogs worldwide to assist in cataloging and in locating specific items.
  • Extreme attention to detail for accurate transcription of catalog information and maintaining records.
  • Familiarity with microform imagers and reader/printers as well as digitization technology.
  • Knowledge of Lutheran history and doctrine (membership in an LCMS congregation preferred but not required).
