Strong winds in a pre-dawn Aug. 2 storm toppled scores of trees at Lutheran Island Camp in Minnesota — damaging buildings and vehicles, but inflicting no injury on campers, according to Rev. Tim Vaughan, the camp’s program director.
Vaughan said that there would be “little, if any” insurance coverage for the estimated $15,000 of damages (not counting tree losses), since insurers were considering the storm to be “an act of God.”
“Thankfully, no one was injured and the property damage was limited,” said Vaughn, who indicated there were several “silver linings” to the storm clouds that week.
Since that was the start of a family week, children were there with their parents — many of whom helped with cleanup. Power was restored by the night of the storm. And, by week’s end, everything was ready for an annual quilt auction there that raised $17,010 for the camp.
The camp has established a fund to replace trees.
Lutheran Island Camp is located on Battle Lake in west central Minnesota, about 40 miles east of Fergus Falls. Its mailing address is 45011 230th St., Henning, MN 56551.
