LCMS President Gerald Kieschnick is encouraging district presidents to provide those in their districts with information in support of a Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA), which would define marriage solely as the union of one man and one woman.
“You know as well as I the position of our Synod that, in the beginning, God instituted marriage to be the lifelong union of one man and one woman (Gen. 2:24; Matt. 19:4-6),” Kieschnick wrote in a June 12 memo to the 35 district presidents. “It is clear that homosexual unions come under categorical prohibition in both the Old and New Testaments (Lev. 18:22,24; 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9-20; 1 Tim. 1:9-10).
“It is thus entirely proper that we encourage our pastors, educators and congregational members to work in support and for the preservation of the divinely designed institution of marriage,” he wrote.
Kieschnick wrote that public-policy experts say that the most effective action citizens can take on the FMA is to write their U.S. senators.
“This is especially true right now, with some believing that a vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment could be coming up soon in the U.S. Senate — perhaps as soon as early July,” he wrote. “For those motivated to promote the amendment, it may be now or never to do something about it.”
