The incumbent Synod president and first vice president have received the most nominations from LCMS congregations for election at this summer’s Synod convention to their respective current positions.
Synod President Gerald Kieschnick received 1,244 nominations for re-election to his office, and First Vice President Daniel Preus garnered 1,150 nominations to continue in his current post.
The number of nominations was not available in time for inclusion in an article in the April Reporter about the slates of nominees for the two positions. Here in alphabetical order is a listing of the five nominees for president and for first vice president, with the number of nominations each received:
President — Dr. William R. Diekelman, 57, president of the Synod’s Oklahoma District and pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, Owasso, Okla., 248; Dr. Gerald B. Kieschnick, 61, incumbent Synod president, 1,244; Dr. Kurt E. Marquart, 69, associate professor of systematic theology at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, 686; Rev. Daniel Preus, 55, incumbent Synod first vice president, 976; and Dr. Dean O. Wenthe, 59, president of the Fort Wayne seminary, 310.
First vice president — Dr. William R. Diekelman, 560; Dr. Ronald M. Garwood, 61, president of the Synod’s Wyoming District, 351; Rev. Vernon D. Gundermann, 66, pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church, Kirkwood, Mo., 434; Rev. Daniel Preus, 1,150; and Dr. Wallace R. Schulz, 59, evangelist with the Lutheran Heritage Foundation and second vice president of the Synod, 652.
