LCMS delegates adopt bylaw to clarify elections process

ST. LOUIS – Delegates to the 62nd Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod July 11 adopted a bylaw change that precludes accepting floor nominations that could make someone already on a slate of candidates ineligible for election, unless the potential effect is reported immediately to the convention.  The bylaw will take effect in 2007.

By vote of 711-439, the convention adopted the change.  The action is a response to a request of the 2001 LCMS Convention, which asked for study of the issue.

Under current bylaws, each member of the Board of Directors must be from different LCMS districts.  The membership of the board for the Concordia University System is governed by the same rule.

In materials presented with the resolution, the floor committee on structure, planning and administration said that the “requirement that no two board members of these boards can be from the same district has resulted in complications in recent conventions.”
