In response to a forecast of an acute nursing shortage, Concordia University, Irvine, Calif., is working toward adding a “second degree” nursing program that can be completed in less than two years.
Scheduled to open in May 2008, the program will offer an accelerated second degree bachelor of science in nursing. The program will allow those who already have earned a bachelor’s degree to pursue a career change to become a registered nurse. Incoming students who have fulfilled all the prerequisites will be able to finish the nursing program in three semesters.
Dr. Colette York will spearhead the new program by serving as its consultant and interim director. York chaired the Nursing Department at Mount St. Mary’s College, Los Angeles, for five years and coordinated the master’s program in nursing at both Clarkson College, Omaha, Neb., and California State University, Bakersfield. She holds a doctorate in nursing science from the University of San Diego.
