HOUSTON – Two resolutions calling for the Commission on Theology and Church Relations (CTCR) to provide both leadership and study materials for furthering the understanding of confessional Lutheranism were adopted today (July 17) by the 63rd Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.
Res. 3-02 asked the CTCR to provide study materials on the ecumenical creeds and Lutheran Confessions so congregations and church workers may prepare for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
Res. 3-03 requested the CTCR to develop a plan for confessional leadership that would include theological symposia and conferences and involve participation by the Synod’s partner churches. The resolution also encouraged Concordia Publishing House to give the “highest priority” to the publication of a new, two-volume dogmatics text.
The convention also expressed its appreciation to Dr. Jerald Joersz, CTCR associate executive director who will retire this year, for his leadership in developing evaluations of religious organizations and movements and for his 30 years of service on the staff.
Other CTCR resolutions adopted on Tuesday include:
• Res. 3-04, asking the CTCR to prepare a study on the natural knowledge of God that will assist members in their public witness;
• Res. 3-05, assigning the CTCR the task of providing further guidance for participation in civic events that include the offering of serial prayer; and
• Res. 3-06, asking the CTCR to develop a report on responsible Christian stewardship of the environment for use by schools and churches.
The 2007 Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod triennial convention is meeting here July 14-19 under the theme “One Message – Christ! His Love is Here for You!”
