If forecasters’ prediction of a “very active” hurricane season proves accurate, the new LCMS Amateur Radio Support Network (ARSN) will be ready to lend a hand.
The new communications network plans to launch by June 1, the official start of the six-month storm season. More than 175 ham radio operators have responded to the invitation to join the network, which will serve LCMS congregations and their communities and assist LCMS World Relief/Human Care in coordinating a response to disasters, weather-related and otherwise.
If disaster strikes, the ARSN will relay “health and welfare” communications on a high frequency network. “Our LCMS hams, many of whom have years of disaster relief experience under their belts, will also be able to connect LCMS World Relief/Human Care with local relief organizations and contacts,” said James Kienker, ARSN coordinator. A licensed amateur radio operator, Kienker uses the amateur radio call sign KCØOQP.
Kienker plans to send information packets to interested hams by May 1. The network will use the frequency most accessible by the LCMS amateur radio operators.
Forecasters at this spring’s National Hurricane Conference predicted an above-average storm season.
