The LCMS Board for Communication Services (BCS), St. Louis, seeks resumes from interested candidates for the position of public relations coordinator.

The public relations coordinator reports to the manager of Public Affairs and Media Relations and is responsible for assisting with the development of communications plans, branding projects, and other special projects as requested by other Synod boards, commissions, and districts.  The coordinator also is responsible for writing press releases, ad copy, and other writing projects; maintaining a media-contact database; responding to inquiries about the use of registered synodical trademarks; designing promotional pieces, such as fliers and media-kit components; and uploading press releases and other content to the BCS section of the LCMS Web site.  Additional responsibilities include assisting in planning special events and providing research assistance for special projects.

Suitable candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field; be a team player with the ability to strengthen and improve relationships; have a commitment to accuracy, integrity, clarity, and meeting deadlines; have knowledge of concept development for special events; be able to coordinate and manage logistics for special events; be capable of managing all aspects of production, including press material and tracking media coverage; have strong communication skills, both written and oral; be able to quickly absorb new information; be proactive and motivated; have the ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously; have strong organizational skills; and be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends as special events require.  A solid understanding of LCMS doctrine and practice also would be highly beneficial.  Some travel may be involved.

Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, is accepting applications for the following two positions:

  • Communications specialist.  This staff member will assist the director of communications in the production of print and Web site resources that communicate the mission and vision of Concordia Seminary to the church and world.

    Duties include writing copy for news releases and seminary; copy editing and proofreading for seminary publications, assisting the distribution of all news and information to media, including church and secular news editors; and compiling reports and analyses on published news releases on a monthly basis.

    The ideal candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, or related discipline, and a minimum of three years experience writing and editing copy for publication in various print and electronic mediums.  Additionally, this candidate must have a demonstrated knowledge of the fundamentals of reporting and writing news releases and editing skills.  This position requires a strong attention to detail and the ability to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines.  Knowledge of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod and a strong understanding of the mission and vision of Concordia Seminary is required. 

  • Graphic artist.  This position is responsible for the design and production of seminary publications, brochures, and other communication pieces for release to the seminary community and the public.  Duties include planning and creating graphic images; participating in the development of all printed and electronic/Web-based materials, such as checking printer proofs; and remain current on emerging technology and techniques in the graphic arts field.  This position requires a strong attention to detail and the ability to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines.

    The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in art, graphic art, or related field; minimum of three years experience as a graphic artist in academia or the publishing industry with excellent graphic design skills is preferred.  A combination of work experience, training, and education commensurate with a bachelor’s degree may be substituted.  Proficiency in Quark Desktop publishing, PhotoShop, Illustrator, and font management software, such as Suitcase, and experience developing and maintaining material archives, is required.
