Thrivent ups pledge to building alliance by $20 million

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans announced in December that it is increasing by $20 million its commitment to “Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity” — the national affordable-housing effort it shares with Habitat for Humanity International, and the largest four-year commitment anyone has made in Habitat’s history.

In a Dec. 11 news release, Thrivent also noted that “Thrivent Builds” marked the completion of its 650th home at the end of 2007.  The alliance makes home ownership a reality for low-income families.

“The plan from the beginning was to add an additional $20 million if the alliance between our nonprofit organizations proved successful,” said Brad Hewitt, senior vice president of Fraternal Operations at Thrivent Financial.  “Given the high member interest and our results to date, we’re ready to make that additional commitment.”

According to the news release, the Thrivent-Habitat alliance, formed in 2005, will build an additional 322 homes in 42 states this year.  Also, Lutherans will have the opportunity to join up to 200 new “teams” traveling to build homes along the Gulf Coast and overseas.
