HOUSTON—In three separate resolutions, the Floor Committee on Human Care (Committee 6) of the 64th Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, meeting this week at the George R. Brown Convention Center, addressed the issues of continuing prison/jail ministry, continuing work initiated by the Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Task Force, and reporting the deaths of departed church workers.
- In Resolution 6-05, “to encourage continued emphasis on prison and jail ministry,” delegates voted 1,075 to 7 (or 99.35 percent) to develop resources to recruit, train and equip clergy, commissioned ministers and lay volunteers for prison and jail ministry; encourage prison ministry among the denomination’s districts; and seek funding for prison ministry grants.
Delegates also overwhelmingly adopted Resolution 6-06, “to continue the work initiated by the Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Task Force,” by a vote of 1,028 in favor (99.42 percent) and 6 against. This resolution thanks the Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Task Force for its work and urges that it continue. It also encourages the Synod to continue developing materials and training regarding domestic violence and child abuse.
- In Resolution 6-08, “to promptly report and publish the death of faithfully departed soldiers of the cross,” delegates voted 1,016 to 23 (or more than 97.7 percent in favor) that LCMS districts promptly report the deaths of current and retired church workers to the Synod so that obituaries may be published in a timely manner in The Lutheran Witness, the Synod’s official magazine, with full obituaries posted on the Synod’s website.
The convention, which concludes Saturday, July 17, is meeting under the theme “ONE People–Forgiven.” Among the approximately 3,000 participants are some 1,200 clergy and lay voting delegates.
