HOUSTON—Through the national and international media outreach of Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM), the Int’l Lutheran Laymen’s League remains committed to supporting the mission of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.
In a July 14 video message to the LCMS convention, Int’l LLL president Michael Onnen said “The Lutheran Hour,” the league’s best-known program, begins its 80th year this October. He said LHM hopes to identify a new speaker to replace the current speaker, Rev. Ken Klaus, who will retire this year.
The 64th Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod is meeting July 10-17 at the George R. Brown Convention Center under the theme “ONE People—Forgiven.” Among the approximately 3,000 participants are some 1,200 clergy and lay voting delegates.
“With God’s help LHM looks forward to a bright future,” Onnen said.
He briefly described other LHM media programs in the U.S. and around the world. “Para el Camino,” a Spanish program, is heard in the U.S., Ecuador and Spain. “Woman to Woman” is aired on more than 300 U.S. stations.
Describing other LHM programs, he said the online “Men’s Network” offers Bible studies and other resources to engage men in Christian life and has registered men from 3,000 LCMS congregations and 400 other churches. LHM is expanding its “Mission U” to offer online evangelism training. Through “Mission Is Possible,” LHM is hosting eight regional conferences, often in cooperation with LCMS districts, with a goal to bring people and churches together to increase their witness.
Through a variety of media and culturally appropriate materials distributed internationally, LHM annually receives a half-million responses, according to Onnen. “At any time, 240,000 people are participating in Bible correspondence courses,” he said.
