Disability conferences to focus on 'inclusivity'

“One God, One Call” is the title of the Lutheran Services in America (LSA) disability network’s biennial conferences to be held May 1-3 in Milwaukee and Oct. 4-6 in Philadelphia.  The May conference is just prior to LSA’s annual conference set for May 3-6, also in Milwaukee.

Under the theme “One People Together,” the conferences are designed to create inclusive church communities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Invited to attend are those with disabilities, as well as families and caregivers, agency staff members, pastors and congregational educators and caregivers, public policy advocates and direct service professionals.

Both conferences feature national and local speakers who will provide encouragement, tools and other resources for supporting people with intellectual disabilities in their congregations.

The Milwaukee conference will focus on caregiver wellness, building congregational support and creating more inclusive environments for those with disabilities.

Keynote speakers at the Milwaukee conference will be Jill Schumann, president and chief executive officer of Lutheran Services in America; Rev. Dave Anderson, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Eau Clair, Wis., a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; David Larson, president and CEO of Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan; and Rev. John Fale, interim executive director of LCMS World Relief and Human Care.

Conference rates range from $75 for groups and families to $200 for individuals.  Hotel reservations at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee must be made by April 11 to get the group rates of $122 to $144 per night, based on occupancy.
