At the LCMS SELC District’s 16th convention, June 21-24 in Oviedo, Fla., delegates re-elected by acclamation the Rev. Dr. Carl H. Krueger of Cudahy, Wis., to his sixth three-year term as district president.
Krueger and the following vice-presidents — also elected by delegates — were installed during the convention:
- the Rev. Andrew J. Dzurovcik, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Clark, N.J., first vice-president.
- the Rev. Wally M. Arp, pastor of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Oviedo, Fla., second vice-president.
- the Rev. Jeffrey A. Stone, pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church, Parma, Ohio, third vice-president.
The convention’s theme was “You shall be my witnesses …” — based on Acts. 1:8.
Among resolutions passed by delegates were the following three measures (all approved unanimously) to:
- adopt changes to the district bylaws. This resolution was considered necessary for three reasons: the addition of a third vice-president by action of the 2009 district convention, merger of the district’s mission board into its board of directors, and to be in harmony with 2010 LCMS convention decisions concerning the Synod Constitution and Bylaws.
- affirm and support the SELC Foundation, including a required IRS stipulation concerning the distribution of assets, in case a not-for-profit entity dissolves.
- encourage support for the Lutheran Malaria Initiative. A provision of this resolution designated that the offering from the convention opening worship service would be contributed to the initiative.
Another SELC resolution drew significant discussion before delegates decided to refer it to the district board of directors for study and possible submission as an overture to the 2013 Synod convention. The resolution would call on the Synod to establish a program and specific training for professional church workers in how to better care for congregations in every stage of the congregation’s life. Much of the discussion reportedly concerned the resolution’s wording that was critical of using terms such as “healthy” and “dying” when referring to congregations.
The SELC District is one of two non-geographic LCMS districts, of which there are 35 in all.
