Seminary seeks campaign director, planned gift officer

Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, seeks to fill two full-time positions:

  • The campaign executive director manages all aspects of campaign planning and execution for a five-year fundraising effort to secure funds for the seminary’s annual operating budget, facilities expansion and enhancements, and endowment.  The campaign executive director will work to position the division, the institution, and its various constituencies for success as the campaign moves through its various phases.

Responsibilities:
 
– Manage relationship portfolio of key volunteers and donors, traveling to conduct personal visits (12 visits per month) to identify, encourage and solicit participation in the campaign.
 
– Work with key volunteers, committee members and non-committee members who relate to key prospects, and assist them in setting agendas and appointments with assigned prospects.
 
– Assist the heads of various committees and leadership groups in preparing and conducting meetings related to the campaign.
 
– Coordinate the activities of the president, senior vice-president for Advancement, executive directors, gift officers and other key staff on campaign assignments, schedule and functions.
 
– Create and maintain a system for managing prospect and planning data.
 
– Coordinate the design and preparation of materials, events and recognition programs.
 
– Develop and coordinate with the director of Advancement Services campaign reports and evaluations such as monthly production reports on activities, potential gifts, gifts solicited but not committed and the total amount committed toward the goal; reports projecting strategies for various gift levels and timeframes; and monthly updates of the campaign timetable.
 
– Work with the campaign counsel for guidance and recommendations on the above responsibilities and all aspects of the campaign.
 
– Coordinate with the executive director of Communications on how the campaign is marketed for the cultivation and solicitation of prospects at all levels.
 
– Monitor and revise the monthly campaign timetable.
 
– Train staff and volunteers on how to accomplish a campaign.
 
– Coordinate with Senior Advancement staff and major gift officers to set strategies and approaches for top prospects ($100,000 and up).
 
– Coordinate with the executive director of Communications on the writing and production of all campaign-related materials.
 
– Coordinate with the executive director of Gift Planning and the director of Principal Gifts the preparation of draft proposals for foundations, corporations and churches.
 
Qualifications:
 
– An understanding and commitment to the mission of Concordia Seminary and its relationships to The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, other denominations and the world.
 
– An ability to see the above-listed responsibilities as a whole, with each part contributing to the fulfillment of the overall responsibility.
 
– Demonstrated ability and at least 10 years of successful experience in fundraising, especially as it relates to conducting a significant comprehensive campaign, are required.
 
– Demonstrated attention to detail, excellent oral and written communication skills and good planning and team skills are required.
 
– Personal tenacity, entrepreneurial leadership and demonstrated stewardship of budget and schedule are required.
 
– A successful communicator and solicitor of key constituents to elicit major, estate, ultimate and transformational gifts.
 
– Successful experience in interacting with institutional structures such as LCMS congregations, districts, and the Synod and its entities.
 
– Active membership in an LCMS congregation and a passion for the mission of Concordia Seminary are required.
 
– Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s or CFRE preferred.
 
– Strong computer literacy required, specifically Microsoft Office Suite.
 
– Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge preferred.
 
Positions supervised: 
 
– Administrative Assistant

  • The planned gift officer is responsible for the identification, cultivation and direct solicitation of significant gifts, especially from estates, to support the strategic institutional priorities of Concordia Seminary.

Responsibilities:
 
– Visit current and prospective donors in assigned regions and areas in the country.
 
– Cultivate relationships that lead to continued and increased financial support.
 
– Solicit current and prospective donors who have the capacity to complete a major gift.
 
– Solicit current and prospective donors to include Concordia Seminary in their estate plans.
 
– Develop and implement strategies to meet personal solicitation goals set by the supervisor at the beginning of each fiscal year.
 
– Collaborate, mentor and guide other members of Advancement regarding development of plans for estate gifts for various donors.
 
– Develop a tracking and reporting process for an estate-gift pipeline.
 
– Implement the planned-gift module of Raiser’s Edge and serve as Advancement’s point person for recording and tracking of planned estate gifts.
 
– Organize and maintain Advancement’s endowment-related files and records with an ultimate goal of digitizing the information.
 
– Identify and implement the promotion of endowments.
 
– Collaborate with the donor stewardship coordinator (or most appropriate Advancement staff) regarding Legacy Society materials, promotions and recognition activities and events.
 
– Develop plans for Legacy Society events in key regional areas across the country.
 
– Develop marketing plans for estate gifts. Collaborate with Creative Services to implement and execute the plans.
 
– Develop and utilize a network of allied professionals across the country to aid and assist donors and Advancement staff and officers.
 
Ancillary duties:
 
– Maintain essential software for the purpose of illustrating estate gift scenarios and prepare examples in a timely manner, as needed by Advancement officers.
 
– Monitor legislative updates related to philanthropy and inform and educate Advancement officers, as needed.
 
– Serve as liaison to the LCMS foundation.
 
Qualifications:
 
– Bachelor’s degree required.
 
– Active membership in an LCMS congregation and a passion for the mission of Concordia Seminary is required.
 
– Five or more years of experience in development or a related area is required.
 
– Experience in establishing gifts through estate plans is required.
 
– Demonstrated evidence of good planning and team skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; good stewardship of time, talent and divisional resources; and ability to work independently.
 
– Strong computer literacy required, specifically Microsoft Office Suite.
