Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon, Wis., will host two conferences in May for parish nurses and those interested in congregational health:
- “Christian Caregiving: The Concept and Practice of Parish Nursing and Congregational Health” — a professional development conference for registered nurses, clergy and others interested in parish nursing and congregational health — will be held May 6-9.
The annual conference is available on campus or in a “distance-learning” format.
Courses include “Roles and Models of Parish Nursing,” “Legal and Ethical Aspects of Parish Nursing and Congregational Health,” “Needs Assessment, Documentation,” “Setting up a Parish Nurse Practice and Office,” “Team Ministry of Congregational Health,” “Budgeting,” “Exercise Ministries” and “Blood Pressure Ministries.”
Registration is $560 for on-site and $710 for distance-learning, which includes all materials, fees and meals. Scholarships are available.
- “Transforming Lives for Health, Healing and Eternity” — the 21st annual conference for parish nurses and others involved in congregational health ministries — is planned for May 30. Pre- and post-conference presentations on the health and wellness of church workers will be led by the Rev. Dr. Dan Paavola, associate professor of theology at Concordia University Wisconsin, on May 29 and 31.
Conference participants may attend up to four breakout sessions on 16 topics, including childhood obesity, facilitating a grief support group, exercise ministries, anger and stress management, celiac disease and communicating with those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
The conference also will include a keynote address by campus pastor Rev. Steven Smith, a panel discussion on parish nursing in the world and an ice-cream social.
Registration for the May 30 conference is $85; the pre- and post-conferences on May 29 and 31 are $60 each. Clergy may attend all three days for $75, and the “group rate” for two or more from the same ministry for attendance May 29-31 is $175 each.
Concordia, Mequon, has offered parish nursing and congregational health programs and workshops since 1989.
