Chinese mission society sets May 10-13 seminar

The Evangelical Lutheran Mission Society for the Chinese (ELMSC) is holding its Third Annual Chinese Seminar on Holy Scripture and Luther’s Small Catechism for May 10-13 at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind.

Chinese-seminar-INSeminar participants are asked to arrive at the seminary by the evening of May 9.

As with the first two annual ELMSC seminars, the LCMS Office of National Mission (ONM) is providing sponsorship again this year.

The seminar is designed especially for Mandarin-speaking North American Chinese Christians who would like to engage in a deeper study of Scripture and the catechism, using Mandarin Chinese.

The Rev. Dr. Michael Paul, theological educator to Taiwan with the LCMS Office of International Mission, said that planners chose the seminary for the event “to encourage participants toward possibly later studying to be a pastor or deaconess in the Lutheran Church.”

Participants will study — in Mandarin Chinese — the basics of salvation, the scriptural narrative of salvation and the six chief parts of Luther’s Small Catechism. Matins and Compline will be conducted daily.

Seminar presenters are all clergymen in the Synod or its partner churches in Canada and Taiwan.

Other than Paul, primary presenters will include:

  • Rev. Dr. Naomichi Masaki, associate professor of Systematic Theology at Concordia Theological Seminary.
  • Rev. Alexander Wu, pastor of Salvation Lutheran Church, Chiayi, Taiwan.
  • Rev. Wayne Zhang, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

“The Office of National Mission is very pleased to again help sponsor this event,” said ONM Executive Director Rev. Bart Day. “It is critical in the North American mission field to be prepared to fully engage our Mandarin-speaking neighbors, especially on university campuses where opportunities abound to connect with international students who are eager to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

The registration fee of $150 covers all seminar costs, including sessions, housing and food.

In addition, the ELMSC will cover up to $400 transportation costs for the first 10 registrants.

Mail the completed form and a check for $150 payable to “ELMSC” to ELMSC, 100 E. Michigan St., Evansville, IN 47711, by April 15.
