LCMS Communications: manager, Editorial Services

LCMS Communications seeks a full-time manager — Editorial Services.

LCMS Communications is responsible for informing, reporting and interpreting — in consultation with applicable officers and boards — the Synod’s purpose, program and positions to its members, and for promoting an increased understanding on the part of the church’s publics of the mission of the church and its positions and programs.

The manager — Editorial Services, reporting to the director of Editorial and Media Relations, is expected to:

  • contribute to the writing and editing of The Lutheran Witness, Reporter, Reporter Online, LCMS e-News and Lutherans Engage the World. 
  • take on general writing, editing and copy-editing projects at the request of the director of Editorial and Media Relations and senior department staff.
  • assume responsibility — on the strength of his or her theological acumen — for writing and editing pieces of a “catechetical” nature.
  • serve as a reporter as assigned, sharing in the “beats” of the department.
  • cover meetings as assigned, sometimes serving as the proxy of the director of Editorial and Media Relations, the associate executive director or the executive director.
  • travel to cover stories, as assigned.
  • be responsible for editorial quality in proofreading, fact-checking and doctrinal review.
  • edit and write news releases, official statements, brochures, training manuals, ministry resources, marketing and advertising copy, Web content, etc., to support various LCMS ministries and share in the editorial workload of the department.
  • supervise, assign and manage the department’s contract writers.

Position requirements include:

  • five years or more experience in a communications field.
  • a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree is more desirable) in a communications or related field.
  • active member of an LCMS congregation.

An ordained clergyman is preferred, but commissioned ministers or laymen thoroughly trained and well-versed in Lutheran theology will be considered.

Competencies (knowledge, skills and abilities):

  • a highly competent and smooth writer capable of multiple styles of writing — news writing, business writing, feature writing, headlines, subheads and captions, brochure copy, blurbs, etc.
  • the same versatile capabilities in terms of editing and copy editing.
  • thoroughly well-versed in English grammar and usage.
  • articulate in the theology, doctrine and practice, positions, history, structure and governance of the Synod.
  • strong management skills.
  • adept at public speaking.
  • dependable in meeting deadlines.

The manager — Editorial Services oversees the department’s senior copy editor/staff writer as well as all editorial contractors.
