Concordia Seminary seeks provost (chief academic officer)

Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, serves church and world by providing theological education and leadership centered in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ for the formation of pastors, missionaries, deaconesses, scholars and leaders in the name of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

Concordia Seminary is currently engaged in a search for a full-time provost (chief academic officer) to work in their Provost’s Office.

Position summary:

The provost, along with the president and executive vice-president, comprise the Executive Management Team (EMT), which is charged with all decision-making responsibility of Concordia Seminary not otherwise delegated by the bylaws of The Lutheran Church— Missouri Synod.

The provost is the chief academic officer of the seminary, providing administrative leadership and oversight for all academic affairs of Concordia Seminary. The provost guides, monitors and evaluates the work of the Academics Division to ensure that the curriculum and other relevant programs are up to date and in accord with the teachings of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Through the faculty and assigned staff, the provost is responsible for creating an environment of learning and formation that makes Concordia Seminary the preferred institution for Lutheran theological studies. The provost is responsible for managing the resources, including intellectual, fiscal and human, necessary to accomplish this task.

Responsibilities:

  1. Serves as a core member of the EMT to fulfill the broad direction (mission), strategy and policies for the seminary, then delegating tactics, details and authority to the deans and vice-presidents for implementation, management and operation. The EMT will occasionally be required to arbitrate, broker or make decisions that should be made at a lower level, and at those times, the EMT agrees that their commitment is primarily to each other, the seminary and the church and they are not representatives, advocates or spokesmen for any individuals or constituencies, including their direct reports.

 

  1. The provost attends and is the president’s advocate during meetings with the Board of Regents.

 

  1. As agreed upon by the EMT, the provost is an ambassador to various outside agencies on behalf of the seminary and speaks publicly and privately on behalf of the president, seminary and EMT.

 

  1. The provost is the initiator of academic policy-setting for the campus. He is responsible for implementation of strategies and policies developed at the EMT and the delegation of the tasks to implement those strategies.

 

  1. Serves as the chief academic officer of the seminary, directly supervising the deans of Ministerial Formation, Advanced Studies, Faculty and Theological Research and Publication; the director of Library Services; the director of Research, Assessment and Academic Programming; and the director of Curriculum, Design and Development.

 

  1. The provost is responsible for institutional assessment.

 

  1. The provost is responsible for ensuring sufficient resources are available to fulfill the mission of the Division of Academic Affairs. This is done in partnership with the other EMT members in the drafting and finalizing of institutional budgets; the determination and attainment of appropriate staffing sizes, recruiting and mentoring of same; the determination of appropriate facilities, technologies and the like.

 

  1. The provost serves as a member of the called faculty. Generally exempted from any teaching obligation, he may teach as time permits.

 

  1. The provost is the chief contact for accrediting agencies and is responsible for all academic matters relating to accreditation.

 

  1. The provost is responsible for reviewing all performance evaluations and files regarding the appointment, promotion, tenure and dismissal of faculty.

 

  1. The provost coordinates and oversees all faculty personnel matters including contracts, faculty load, administrative responsibilities, research and writing, sabbatical leaves, advancement in rank, etc.

 

  1. The provost establishes a workload expectation and compensation scale for faculty.

 

  1. The provost serves as the primary filter on behalf of the president for concerns of the faculty of the seminary and resolves those issues in accordance with the established tenor of the president. Refers matters to the EMT when appropriate.

 

  1. In the stead of the president, the provost serves as the ex officio member of all faculty standing committees of the seminary. (Handbook 3.8.2.6 (d) and (g))

 

  1. Upon the sudden death, sudden resignation, removal or incapacitation of the president, the provost will assume the position of acting president until the Board of Regents is able to meet.

Qualifications:

  1. Minister of Religion—Ordained in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

 

  1. Demonstrated leadership skills within a diverse and dynamic organization, including the ability to work collegially and cooperatively across all units of campus and to build strong cohesive teams.

 

  1. Demonstrated experience in academic administration.

 

  1. Demonstrated experience in academic teaching and/or research.

 

  1. Earned academic doctorate preferred; D.Min. with special qualifications will be considered.

 

  1. Excellent communications skills, both oral and written.

Positions supervised:

Deans of Ministerial Formation, Advanced Studies, Faculty and Theological Research and Publication; the director of Library Services; the director of Research, Assessment and Academic Programming; and the director of Curriculum Design and Development.

Appointment status:

A regularly called member of the faculty appointed by the Board of Regents upon the recommendation of the president. Annual reviews.
