LCMS adds Better Business Bureau Accreditation

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc. has earned status as a Better Business Bureau (BBB) Accredited Charity Seal Holder, after having met the BBB’s 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.

BBB Standards ensure that an organization has:

  • proper governance and oversight;
  • a method to measure organizational performance and effectiveness;
  • sound financial stewardship and practices; and
  • complete and accurate fundraising and informational materials.

“Charities that meet these best practices go above and beyond legal requirements, putting them in an elite group,” said Michelle Corey, BBB president and CEO.

Mark Hofman, executive director of LCMS Mission Advancement, noted that achieving accredited charity status is just another step in the pursuit of excellence.

The LCMS had already been recognized by another watchdog, Guidestar, as a Platinum-level participant in its Exchange program.

“We’re turning now to creating a single-point online reference page at lcms.org that will serve anyone who desires easy access to the same information required by the BBB and Guidestar, and convenient ways to ask additional questions about how the LCMS carries out its mission on behalf of the Synod’s member congregations,” Hofman said.

“We have a sacred duty to carry out this work in a manner worthy of the Savior we serve. It’s His seal of approval — not man’s — that we really covet and are pursuing.”
