October ‘Lutheran Witness’ studies Galatians

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel,” St. Paul chastised the Galatian congregations. “Not that there is another one” (Gal. 1:6–7).

The pure Gospel, unadulterated by obedience to vain works, rings throughout the October issue of The Lutheran Witness. St. Paul’s letter provides the key, not only to the Reformation, but to the entirety of the Christian life. Not only will you learn about the context of the Galatian people and get an overview of the theology in the letter, but you will also learn why Luther called this book his “beloved Katie von Bora” and what effect it had on the Reformation. There’s even a guide to help you read Luther’s commentaries on Galatians — commentaries that shaped the Reformation.

In the last century (or so), a misinterpretation of Galatians 3:28 opened the door for the ordination of women. The Rev. Dr. A. Andrew Das addresses this misinterpretation. Finally, lest Christians think that this gospel of freedom provides opportunity to sin, the Rev. Mark Surburg shows how St. Paul teaches and makes use of the third use of the law in Galatians.
