Alan D. Gunderman, executive director of educational services for the LCMS Kansas District since 1990, died of a heart attack Dec. 25 at his home in Topeka.
The funeral service for Gunderman, 59, was Dec. 30 at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, Topeka. Rev. Peter Tremain, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Topeka, where Gunderman was a member, said that Faith’s sanctuary seats about 350, and that Grace Cathedral was chosen “because it was a large enough liturgical setting” to accommodate the more than 700 people who attended the service.
Prior to joining the district staff, Gunderman was a director of Christian education at Synod congregations in Kansas, Texas, North Carolina and Florida and taught at a Lutheran school in Florida.
He was a 1966 graduate of Concordia College, Seward, Neb.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly; a daughter, Jennifer (Audley) Freed of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Dan Gunderman, New York; five sisters and two brothers.
