A three-student team from Concordia College, Bronxville, N.Y., finished in the top 11 percent among 599 teams participating in the 2004 Mathematical Contest in Modeling.
The international competition is sponsored by the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Viji George, president of the college, said the team’s ranking “places them ahead of more than 500 teams, and puts them on a level with teams from such prestigious institutions as MIT, Cornell and Duke.”
The competition took place Feb. 5-10, with teams working together on their campuses to provide solutions to problems. Their answers were then mailed in for ranking.
The results of the 2004 competition were announced March 22.
“There is no other international contest in mathematics that pits teams of three students from a college against the world, using senior-level and graduate-level mathematics to solve real-world, often vital, societal problems,” said Dr. John Loase, professor of mathematics at Concordia and advisor of Concordia’s three three-student mathematics teams.
Members of the top-ranked team are Concordia students Kirk Bamford of Manchester, England; John Gutzler, Harvard, Mass.; and Andrew Kassouf, Bel Air, Md.
