Former LCMS World Mission executive Dr. Allan Buckman will begin serving Nov. 1 as executive director of the Lutheran Society for Missiology.

The Lutheran Society for Missiology publishes a journal, Missio Apostolica, and occasional books about missions. It was created, according to its purpose statement, “to cast a vision for the importance of mission among Lutherans, especially through the identification and sharing of cutting-edge mission strategies.”
The society’s journal goes predominantly to rostered church workers, college and seminary faculty, and mission leaders. Buckman said he sees his role as broadening that scope to include laypeople, retired missionaries and partner-church members worldwide.
“At a time when the global mission challenge is becoming increasingly complex, the need for effective information sharing becomes correspondingly important,” he said.
Buckman, 64, began his 37 years of service with the Synod’s Board for Mission Services in 1965 as a missionary to Nigeria. In 1977, he became the board’s secretary for Africa, Europe and the Middle East, and in 1989 became its director of world services. He retired from full-time service in 2003 but continues to serve part time as a consultant.
