Congregations get Servant Events magazine

A list of 75 Servant Events planned for next summer in this country and in Germany was mailed in mid-November to all Synod congregations from LCMS Youth Ministry.

The information, which includes details about registration, is in the form of a magazine titled “Extreme 05.” The magazine also may be downloaded from the Web by going to www.lcms.org/youth and clicking on “Servant Events.”

A news release from the youth-ministry office, which has sponsored Servant Events since 1981 (with 2005 marking their 25th year), notes that the events are open to youth, adults, and families of LCMS congregations.

Opportunities for service in 2005 include construction projects, human-care and outreach events, and “family-based events … appropriate for all ages,” said Jim Lohman, associate director for Youth Ministry — Servant Events.

“Youth want to make a difference,” Lohman said.  “Through Servant Events, [they] have the opportunity to serve others because of Jesus, and are involved in the greater ministry of the church as they assist individuals, camps, organizations and service agencies throughout [the Synod].”

Gretchen Jameson, associate director for Youth Ministry — Communications, told Reporter that the July 27-Aug. 10 event in Cottbus, Germany, will involve “work with 10 German and 10 Polish young adults to prepare and run a camp for inner-city children.”

Jameson said that since the summer of 1981, “26,000 youth and adults have completed acts of service at more than 970 Servant Events across 34 states and nine countries.”
