India Lutherans elect new president

Delegates to the national convention of the India Evangelical Lutheran Church (IELC), meeting June 7 in Nagercoil, India, elected Rev. S. Rajagambeeram as president.

The election marks a new beginning for the IELC, according to Dr. Herbert Hoefer, area director for India and Sri Lanka with LCMS World Mission.  Because of internal struggles and subsequent court cases, the church body has been without a fully functioning administration for nearly a decade, he said.

“We join God’s people in the IELC in thanking God for the dedication and renewal of His church that He has brought about,” Hoefer said.

Rajagambeeram has been invited to take part in the Ablaze! International Summit, July 7-9 in St. Louis, where LCMS World Mission staff and partner-church leaders will discuss the Ablaze! goal of sharing the Gospel with 100 million people worldwide by 2017.  India is targeting one-fourth of that goal, Hoefer said.
