Lutherans send aid to Haiti

LCMS World Relief and Human Care has sent an initial grant of $18,000 to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti to provide emergency supplies of food, water, medicine and other necessities to hurricane survivors in hard-hit Gonaives and the surrounding area.

More than 1,500 deaths in Haiti have been attributed to Hurricane Jeanne, which caused massive flooding in more than half of the country, according to news reports.

Damage assessment is under way to determine needs not only in Haiti but also in Jamaica, Grenada, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands, according to LCMS World Relief and Human Care spokesman Greg Koenig.

“LCMS World Relief and Human Care will work through LCMS World Mission, national Lutheran church partners and [Baltimore-based] Lutheran World Relief to offer care for body and soul throughout the Caribbean,” Koenig said.

If you’d like to help, send donations earmarked “Haiti” to LCMS World Relief, P.O. Box 66861, St. Louis, MO 63166-9810; call the credit-card gift line at (888) 930-4438; or
