Wheat Ridge Ministries is offering a new service to connect short-term medical-mission volunteers with Lutheran and Lutheran-related agencies and congregations.
Dr. Les Schmidt of Kansas City, Mo., has been named coordinator of the new program, known as the Short-Term Medical Mission Resource Service. Until his retirement last year, Schmidt was counselor for long-term volunteer missionaries and specialized ministries with LCMS World Mission.
A news release from Wheat Ridge, an independent Lutheran charitable organization based in Itasca, Ill., says that the resource service has four “primary functions”:
- “to connect individuals and congregations with medical-mission opportunities in the United States and internationally;
- “to equip leaders of congregations who want to develop medical-mission work as an outreach ministry of the congregation;
- “to develop specific medical-mission opportunities in select locations where Wheat Ridge is helping to seed new ministries; and
- “to serve as a connecting and networking hub for various Lutheran medical-ministry organizations and efforts.”
