Wheat Ridge Ministries of Itasca, Ill., has announced the recipients of major grants for new “health and hope” projects worldwide and is calling for applications for its domestic Congregation Health and Hope Grants Program.
The independent Lutheran charitable organization approved six major grants totaling $180,000, primarily to assists projects or organizations or groups of congregations. Deadline is Aug. 1 for the next round of major grants, which Wheat Ridge awards two times each year.
The organization will accept applications between July 1 and Sept. 30 for its 2004 Congregation Health and Hope Grant program, which primarily benefits health and hope projects of congregations and their communities.
For that program, Wheat Ridge plans to award about 25 grants of $2,000 to individual congregations or $6,000 for multi-congregation health projects that must be new and matched dollar-for-dollar to support and promote the health and well-being of people in individual or groups of congregations and their immediate communities.

The major grants Wheat Ridge announced last month are:
- $10,000 for Associacao Amigo Dos Meninos, Sao Leopoldo, Brazil, to support health care, education, housing and legal services for poor women and families.
- $20,000 to the Arab Lutheran congregation in Jerusalem, Israel, to help develop Martin Luther Elderly Day Care Centre, for improving the quality of life for the elderly.
- $35,000 Central City Lutheran Mission, San Bernardino, Calif., to add a bilingual liaison person to its wellness center.
- $40,000 to the Dream Makers Project, Philadelphia, Pa., for Lutheran Settlement House to identify and educate young homeless parents in understanding and working with their children.
- $35,000 for a transitional-living program for homeless men recovering from addictions sponsored by Serenity Inns, Inc., Milwaukee, Wis., and supported by Lutheran congregations.
- $40,000 for Sheltering Arms, Inc., Ocala, Fla., a ministry developed by a Lutheran congregation to operate an emergency-care home for neglected, abused or abandoned children ordered to shelters by the courts.
