Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, will present its annual Symposia Series Jan. 17-20. The series includes:
- the 21st Annual Symposium on Exegetical Theology, which will explore “Justification in the Scriptures: Old and New Challenges to ‘The Doctrine upon which the Church Stands or Falls.'”
Scheduled presenters include Fort Wayne seminary faculty members Dr. Walter A. Maier III, associate professor of exegetical theology; Dr. Peter J. Scaer, assistant professor of exegetical theology; Dr. Arthur A. Just Jr., professor of exegetical theology, dean of the chapel, and director of deaconess studies; Dr. Daniel L. Gard, associate professor of exegetical theology and dean of graduate studies; Dr. William C. Weinrich, professor of historical theology and academic dean; and Dr. Lawrence R. Rast Jr., associate professor of historical theology and assistant academic dean. Also scheduled to speak is seminary President Dean O. Wenthe.
Guest lecturers include Dr. Stephen Westerholm, professor of Biblical studies at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; Dr. Mark A. Seifrid, professor of New Testament interpretation at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky.; and Dr. Guy P. Waters, professor at Belhaven College, Jackson, Miss.
- the 29th Annual Symposium on the Lutheran Confessions, which will discuss “The Holy Spirit as Giver, Gift, and Gifts.”
Seminary-faculty presenters include Rev. John T. Pless, assistant professor of pastoral ministry and missions; Dr. David P. Scaer, chair of the Department of Systematic Theology and professor of systematic theology and New Testament; and Dr. Kurt E. Marquart, associate professor of systematic theology.
Also presenting will be Dr. Paul E. Rorem, editor of the Lutheran Quarterly and professor of church history at Princeton University, Princeton, N.J.; Rev. Philip Max Johnson, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Jersey City, N.J.; and Dr. John R. Nunes, research associate in urban ministry, Wheat Ridge Ministries, Itasca, Ill.
Registration is $150 for the entire four-day symposia and includes a banquet on Jan. 19. Separate registrations also are available: $70 for the exegetical symposium (no meals), and $120 for the confessions symposium (includes banquet). - A pre-symposia daylong Lenten Preaching Workshop, with the theme “Coming Home from Exile,” will be held Jan. 16 in conjunction with the Symposia Series. The workshop is designed to assist pastors in sermon preparation and liturgical planning for the Divine Service, as well as midweek services, Holy Week, and Easter worship. Leading the workshop will be Rev. Chad L. Bird, assistant professor of Registration for the workshop is $25 and may be paid with the symposia registration.
