Lutherans For Life’s (LFL) national 2005 conference is set for Nov. 11-13 at the Sheraton Westport Lakeside Chalet in St. Louis. Its theme is “In Life, in Death, Abide With Me.”
Also, a Nov. 11 “bonus” bioethics conference at the same location will focus on “The Image of God: Its Meaning and Implications.”
LFL, based in Nevada, Iowa, is a pro-life, pro-family volunteer organization with state federations and chapters nationwide.
LFL, LCMS World Relief/Human Care, and the Concordia Bioethics Institute at Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon, are co-sponsors of the bonus conference.
Both conferences feature plenary speakers and workshops, and the LFL conference also will include worship and Bible study.
Scheduled keynoters for the bioethics conference are the following:
- Dr. Nigel M. de S. Cameron of Washington, D.C., president of the Institute on Biotechnology and the Human Future, and director of the Council for Biotechnology Policy;
- Dr. Gilbert Meilaender, Valparaiso, Ind., a member of the President’s Council on Bioethics and the Richard and Phyllis Duesenberg Professor of Christian Ethics at Valparaiso University; and
- Wesley J. Smith, Castro Valley, Calif., a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute, attorney and consultant for the International Task Force on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide, and special consultant to the Center for Bioethics and Culture.
The bioethics conference’s closing keynote session, featuring Smith, also will serve as the opening session of the national LFL conference.
Other speakers and workshop leaders scheduled for the LFL conference include the following:
- Rev. Todd Wilken, Waterloo, Ill., host of “Issues, Etc.” on the Synod’s Radio Station KFUO-AM, St. Louis;
- Nancy Valko, St. Louis, a writer on pro-life topics, president of Missouri Nurses for Life, and spokesman for the National Association of Pro-life Nurses;
- Dr. Robert Weise, Edwardsville, Ill., professor of practical theology and professor of Pastoral Ministry and the Life Sciences at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis; and
- Dr. James I. Lamb, State Center, Iowa, LFL executive director, who will deliver the message during Sunday worship.
Registration fee for the bioethics conference only (including two meals) is $50 per person. For the LFL conference, the fee is $95 (including four meals), with discounts available for spouses and students. For both conferences, the rate is $130 per person and $250 for married couples.
