Concordia University in Irvine, Calif., is now offering a master of arts degree in international studies, in cooperation with China’s Shenzhen Education Bureau.
Approved by Concordia’s board of regents in December, the new graduate program provides opportunities for Americans to experience life in China for one academic year — September 2005 to May 2006. It is offered through Concordia’s School of Adult Studies.
Students in the new graduate program will teach English in public schools in Shenzhen, China, and select from four emphases on life in China — business, education, fine arts, and theology. While overseas, the students will take online courses tailored to their emphasis, and receive free food, housing, transportation, and a monthly salary for teaching.
The new degree is the latest step in Concordia’s partnership with education leaders in Shenzhen, which began in 2003. To date, more than 125 teachers and administrators from schools in Shenzhen have studied education and American culture at Concordia, Irvine, and have observed classrooms in several Orange County (Calif.) elementary, middle, and high schools.
