Reporter and The Lutheran Witness, the Synod’s two official periodicals, picked up several awards at last month’s Associated Church Press (ACP) and Evangelical Press Association (EPA) competitions for work done in 2004. Awards presentations for the ACP and the EPA were held April 26 in Nashville, Tenn., and Chicago, respectively.
Reporter and The Lutheran Witness tied for a third-place “Honorable Mention” award from the ACP in the category of “Letters to the Editor.” Cited were the February 2004 “Letters to the Editor” in Reporter and the December “Letters” in The Lutheran Witness. Both were edited by Rev. David L. Mahsman, former director of News and Information with the Board for Communication Services.
The Lutheran Witness also won ACP “Honorable Mention” awards in the “Critical Review” category for “The Truth About the Da Vinci Code” by Brent McGuire, featured in the May 2004 issue, and in the “Humor Graphic” category for an illustration by Ed Koehler that accompanied “Victory Over the Monster” in the magazine’s March 2004 issue.
McGuire’s “The Truth About the Da Vinci Code” also won a second-place “Higher Goals” award in the EPA’s “Critical Review” category.
The ACP is an association of 124 church-related publications and news services, and the EPA has more than 250 religious-periodical members. Both organizations sponsor annual competitions to recognize excellence in religious journalism.
