After Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, 20 volunteers from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, gathered supplies and headed south to help those who had lost their homes and possessions in the storm. The group of volunteers, composed primarily of seminarians, spent a week in Slidell, La., removing debris and cleaning out flooded homes.
Now the seminary is making plans to send another group of volunteers to help hurricane victims during the school’s Thanksgiving break, Nov. 18-25, and it is inviting other Lutherans to join them. The group will serve in southeast Texas, Louisiana, or Mississippi, depending upon where help is most needed at that time.
“One of the rich experiences that some 20 of our students count a privilege and a blessing was helping hurricane victims for a week in September,” said Dr. Dean O. Wenthe, the seminary’s president. “‘We received more than we gave,’ one seminarian commented as he recalled the faith of those who had lost so much.”
Expenses for the trip — which include travel to the work site, lodging, and meals — will be covered by LCMS World Relief/Human Care and the Lutheran Foundation of Fort Wayne for up to 50 volunteers. Deadline to sign up is Nov. 14.
