“Women: Making a Difference” is the theme of the first national conference sponsored by the Women’s Leadership Institute of Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon.
The conference, scheduled for May 19-21 at the Manchester East Hotel in Milwaukee, is designed to encourage and equip women in “fulfilling their servant leadership roles.” Participants will “evaluate their own attitudes about women in leadership, exchange ideas with other women, forge new friendships, and be encouraged and equipped to better meet the challenges they face in their homes, churches, and workplaces,” according to Dr. Mary Hilgendorf, WLI director.
Giving keynote presentations will be Dr. Ralph Bohlmann, LCMS president emeritus, who will discuss “Women in Biblical Perspective” and “LCMS History and Perspective on Women,” and Dr. Elizabeth Goodine, a professor in the Religious Studies department of Loyola University, New Orleans, who will speak on “Historical Portraits: Women in the Early Church and Beyond.”
Other presenters include Dr. Donna Streufert, former editor of the Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly, who will lead a Bible study, and Dr. Patrick Ferry, president of Concordia, Mequon, who will preach at a worship service.
The conference also will include a dramatic presentation on the life of Corrie ten Boom by Mary Ellen Atwood of Acacia Theater; an introduction to the university’s new Women’s Studies program by its director, Dr. Sally Canapa; and a review of women’s resources available at the school.
The Women’s Leadership Institute was founded in 2002 to provide “opportunities for women to grow in the unique gifts of leadership and character that God gives to them for service to Christ in the church and the world.”
Conference registration is $95 and includes two meals. Lodging at the Radisson North Shore hotel is available for $75 per night and includes continental breakfast.
