Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, will present its annual symposia on exegetical and confessional theology Jan. 16-19.
The four-day symposia includes:
- the 22nd Annual Symposium on Exegetical Theology, Jan. 16-17, which will discuss “Christian Identity in a Pagan World: Lessons from Ancient Israel and Early Christianity,” and
- the 30th Annual Symposium on the Lutheran Confessions, Jan. 17-19, which will focus on “Confessional Lutheranism in the Ecumenical World.”
Scheduled symposia presentations and speakers are:
- “Luther, Lutheranism, and the Challenge of Islam,” Dr. Adam Francisco, assistant professor of history at Concordia College, Bronxville, N.Y.
- “The Drift of Neo-Evangelicalism into Mainstream Protestantism,” Dr. D.G. Hart, visiting professor at Westminister Seminary — California, Escondido, Calif.
- “A Confessional Lutheran Voice in the Contemporary Scene,” Dr. Robert Benne, director of the Center for Religion and Society at Roanoke College, Salem, Va.
- “Sola Fide: Luther and Calvin,” Dr. Phillip Cary, director of the philosophy program at Eastern University, St. Davids, Pa.
Paper copies of the speakers’ presentations will not be available as in past years. Instead, the lectures and essays will be posted online for use by participants during — and after — the event.
The seminary also will offer a Lenten Preaching Seminar on Jan. 15, the day prior to the opening of the symposia series. Dr. Timothy C.J. Quill, associate professor of pastoral ministry and missions at Concordia Theological Seminary, will address the topic “Baptized into Christ’s Death: Catechetical Preaching on Holy Baptism and the Passion of Christ.”

Registration for the entire symposia series is $165 and includes a banquet. Participants also may register only for the exegetical theology symposium ($80) or the symposium on Lutheran confessions ($135, includes banquet).
