Free e-newsletter offers mission tips

“Seven Practices of Effective Ministry” for congregations is the focus of the current issue of “Mission Moments,” a free biweekly electronic newsletter from the Center for U.S. Missions in Irvine, Calif.

The practices, related by Rev. Glenn A. Lucas, director of training for the center, are:

  • Figure out what’s important and how to measure it.
  • Concentrate on “taking steps toward a specific goal” rather than starting another new program.
  • Don’t try to do too many things, but narrow your focus for a greater impact.
  • Likewise, don’t try to cover too much ground in sermons and other teaching avenues — simplify your message.
  • Listen to what outsiders have to say so you can focus on “who you’re trying to reach” instead of “who you’re trying to keep.”
  • “Replace yourself” with new leaders and encourage them to use their talents in the congregation’s ministries.
  • Regularly evaluate your ministry plan with the aim of making it better.

“Mission Moments” is designed to “bring information and encouragement to all who desire to share God’s great love in Jesus Christ with others.”  To subscribe to the newsletter, or for more information about the Center for U.S. Missions, call (949) 854-8002, Ext. 1780, or visit its Web site.
