Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, mailed its first issue of Deaconess to 
The newsletter — to be published three times a year — highlights deaconess education and provides insight into the lives of current deaconess students and graduates of the seminary’s deaconess program.
“Long in the planning stage, this inaugural newsletter sets the tone for deaconess education at Concordia Seminary,” said Dr. Bruce Hartung, faculty director of deaconess studies at the seminary. “We expect the number of students enrolled in deaconess studies to grow even faster than it has and expect our graduates to take their place in the church as women who, in the action of their vocation, point to Christ in word and deed.”
Seventeen students are currently enrolled in the seminary’s four-year-old deaconess training program, according to Hartung.
The first issue of Deaconess includes stories about a deaconess who is serving in Alaska, a deaconess intern who serves Hispanic people, and a recent graduate of the seminary’s deaconess program who serves a prison ministry in southern Illinois.
The next issue of Deaconess will be available this fall. Archival copies will be available in PDF format on the seminary’s Web site at www.csl.edu (click on “Resources,” then “Publications”).
