“Recapturing a Full-Bodied Theology of the Resurrection: Christ’s and Ours” is the title of the 17th Annual Theological Symposium, to be held Sept. 19-20 at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
Modern-day theology and preaching often omit the true meaning of Easter and Christ’s resurrection, according to symposium planners, and, as a result, “many Christians have lost sight of the reality of their own resurrection on the Last Day.”
The upcoming symposium will “look at how the church has reached its current state and discuss the importance of a restored biblical emphasis on the resurrection.” It also will explore topics related to pastoral care, including end-of-life issues, environmental issues, and human sexuality.
The event is open to parish pastors, district and Synod officials, seminary and Concordia University students and faculty, and interested lay people. One CEU is available to each attendee.
Plenary presenters include Dr. Joel Biermann, Dr. David Maxwell, and Dr. Timothy Saleska — all theology professors at the seminary — and Dr. Donald Hagner, George Eldon Ladd professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, Calif., and Dr. Gilbert Meilander, Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg professor of Christian ethics at Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind.
Serving as plenary responders will be Dr. Paul Robinson and Dr. Jeffrey Kloha, associate professor and chairman of the Department of Historical Theology, and assistant professor of exegetical theology, respectively, at the seminary.
Also featured will be broadcast and print journalist Cal Thomas, who will deliver the Eighth Annual Hubert L. Dellinger Jr. Lecture at 7 p.m. Sept. 19.
Symposium attendees also are invited to stay after the symposium to take part in Witness Workshop 2006, Sept. 20-21 at the seminary. In four sessions, the workshop will explore biblical texts that witness the Gospel of Jesus Christ and address questions raised by skeptics. Leading the workshop will be Dr. A.R. Victor Raj, professor of mission and exegetical theology and assistant director of the seminary’s Institute for Mission Studies.
Full registration for the symposium is $110 before Sept. 8, and $120 on or after that date. Full-time students may register for $30, and full-time students and faculty from LCMS seminaries, colleges, and universities may attend free. Partial registration by day or session also is available. Meals and lodging are extra.
The Cal Thomas lecture is free and open to the public.
