The Association of Lutheran Older Adults (ALOA) is sponsoring a Lutherhostel Oct. 21-26 at the Lutheran Coastal Retreat Center in Isle of Palms (Charleston), S.C.
Designed for older adults, the six-day event is intended to “foster opportunities for intellectual, social, and spiritual growth” and offer a “unique educational adventure … presented from the Lutheran tradition,” according to an ALOA news release.
A typical day begins and ends with devotions, offers a Bible study, and includes various one-hour presentations — many incorporating the “local flavor” of the area.
The upcoming Lutherhostel will feature:
- Rev. Robert Zimmer, past president of Wheat Ridge Ministries and ALOA, as main presenter and Bible study leader.
- Dr. Carl Schalk, distinguished professor of church music emeritus at Concordia University Chicago, as choir director and leader of daily worship and devotions.
Other presenters and their topics are Dr. Bart Saylor, on “American Roots Music”; Randy Burbage, “The History, Recovery, and Restoration of the Confederate Submarine H.L. Hunley”; Dr. Bernard E. Powers, “Low Country African-American Culture”; Mildred Bennett Brown, “Weaving Sweetgrass Baskets”; and Anna Kay Singley, “Papermaking and the Creation of a Journal.”
The event also includes a day in Charleston, with a visit to historic St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church and a cruise of Charleston Harbor.
Registration is $570 per person for double occupancy — or $680 for singles and $435 for commuters — and includes all meals and lodging.
