Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind., will present its annual symposia on exegetical and confessional theology Jan. 15-18.
The four-day symposia includes:
- the 23rd Annual Symposium on Exegetical Theology, Jan. 15-16, which will discuss “Atonement for Sin in the Scriptures: Challenging the Modern Dismissal of this Biblical Theme,” and
- the 31st Annual Symposium on the Lutheran Confessions, Jan. 17-18, which will focus on “Atonement: Biblical, Confessional, Ecumenical Perspectives.”
Scheduled presentations and speakers include:
- “Atonement and the Two Kinds of Righteousness” by Dr. Charles P. Arand, professor and chairman of the Department of Systematic Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
- “Christ Died for our Sins According to the Scriptures: Paul’s Gospel and its Old Testament Background” and “The Biblical Doctrine of the Atonement and Contemporary Debate,” Dr. Simon J. Gathercole, lecturer in New Testament Studies at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England.
- “Son-Substitute, Servant, and Sacrifice: Atonement in the Gospel of Matthew,” Dr. Jeffrey A. Gibbs, professor of exegetical theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
- “Eucharist and Eschatology in the Thought of Pope Benedict XVI,” Dr. James Massa, executive director of the Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
- “Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin on the Significance of Christ’s Death,” Dr. John A. Maxfield, associate pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Francis, Minn.
- “The Work of Christ and the Deconstruction of Twentieth Century Lutheranism,” Dr. Michael J. Root, professor of systematic theology and dean of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C.
Paper copies of the speakers’ presentations will not be distributed, but will be available online.
Prior to the symposia series, the seminary will offer a Lenten preaching workshop designed to help pastors prepare sermons and guide liturgical planning for divine services, weekly services, and Holy Week and Easter worship. The workshop, “The arma Christi — The Instruments of Christ’s Passion,” will be led by Professor Roland Ziegler Jan. 14.

Registration for the entire symposia series is $130. Participants also may register only for the Exegetical Theology Symposium ($65) or the Symposium on Lutheran Confessions ($98). Meals and lodging are extra.
