Among convention actions related to higher education, delegates approved two resolutions that allow the boards of regents of LCMS colleges, universities, and seminaries to appoint up to four additional voting members.
Both resolutions allow boards to immediately add members with special skills and knowledge in areas such as finances, fundraising, human resources, facilities, and administration, which is expected to result in better decision-making and stronger institutions.
Res. 5-04 relates to the 10 higher-education institutions of the Synod’s Concordia University System, allowing each board to in-crease in size from the current nine members to as many as 13 members.
Res. 5-03A relates to the Synod’s two seminaries — in St. Louis and Fort Wayne, Ind. — allowing each board to increase from seven members to as many as 11.
Other higher-education resolutions adopted by delegates include:
- Res. 5-05, encouraging continuing education for pastors. The resolution asks congregations to support the continuing-education plans of their pastors by granting them study leaves and providing financial support.
- Res. 5-06, changing LCMS Bylaws to prevent employees of Synod colleges, universities, and seminaries from serving as voting members on either the Board for Pastoral Education or the Board for University Education. The measure is intended to avoid conflicts of interest.
