'Bach at the Sem' begins new season

Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, announces the 17th season of “Bach at the Sem,” featuring presentations of the music of J.S. Bach by The American Kantorei, under the direction of Robert Bergt.

The concerts are held at 3 p.m. on weekend afternoons in the seminary’s Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus.  There is no admission charge and no tickets are issued, but free-will offerings are accepted to support the annual series.

Bach at the Sem concerts are scheduled for:

  • Saturday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m., with performances of Cantata 80, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God,” and Cantata 119, “Oh Jerusalem! Praise the Lord,” by J.S. Bach.
  • Sunday, Dec. 14, at 3 p.m., with Advent and Christmas music – the J.S. Bach oratorio “Magnificat in D Major” and Cantata 140, “Wake, Awake for Night is Flying”; Hugo Distler’s motet on the same hymn; and Heinrich Schutz’s motet, “God So Loved the World.”
  • Sunday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m., with three motets, Jan Bender’s “God So Loved the World”; Hugo Distler’s “Joseph, Dearest Joseph Mine”; and Bach’s “Praise the Lord, All You Lands.”
  • Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m., with Felix Mendelssohn’s “Hymn of Praise” and August Christian Bergt’s “Easter Hymn.”  An enlarged Chamber Orchestra with choirs from St. Louis University and guest organist David Mulbury join the Kantorei for these presentations.
  • The American Kantorei is a choral and orchestral ensemble dedicated to the performance of church music from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Neoclassical periods.  The works of J.S. Bach form the core of its repertoire.  Bach at the Sem is funded largely by individual supporters.
