Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon, is hosting two training conferences for parish nurses, congregational health workers, pastors, and others interested in congregational health.
- The 16th annual “Concordia Conference for Parish Nurse and Congregational Health Ministries” will be held May 29-30 under the theme “Be Well, Serve Well.”
Keynote speaker will be Dr. Mary Moller, clinical director at Suncrest Wellness Center in Spokane, Wash., who will address “Wellness: Choice not Cliché.”
Conference participants will have the opportunity to attend up to six breakout sessions on 30 topics, including “Preparing for a Pandemic Influenza,” “Psychiatric Wellness,” “Stress and the Family of Mentally Ill Adults,” “Starting and Sustaining a Parish Nurse Ministry,” “Supporting Families in their Journey of Grief,” “Healthy Relationships,” “Community Based Stroke Screening,” “Preparing for Disaster,” and “Taking Responsibility for your own Happiness.”
Two “pre-conferences” May 28 will feature presentations on “Leading from the Second Chair” by Dr. Louis C. Jander, mission and ministry facilitator for the LCMS Texas District, and “God’s Stewards: Volunteers — Finding ’em, Teaching ’em, and Keeping ’em” by Dr. Jamie Spikes, professor and parish nurse educator at Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina.
Registration for each pre-conference is $55; daily rates for May 29 and 30 are $90 (includes lunch) and $80, respectively. Full-conference (including pre-conferences) registration is $270.
- “The Concept and Practice of Parish Nursing and Congregational Health” will be held June 9-12 (9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) and again, in the fall, on five consecutive Tuesdays — Sept. 9, 16, 23, 30, and Oct. 7 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).
The intensive training conference may be taken on-site for continuing education units (CEUs) or college credit; at home, with a mentor; or via the Web, as an “E-learning student.”
Courses will cover topics including the history of parish nursing, roles and models of the parish nurse, the theology of health and healing, legal and ethical aspects of parish nursing, spiritual assessment and caregiving, setting up a parish nurse practice and office, budgeting, self care for parish nurses, and blood-pressure ministries.
Registration is $100 per day (or $400 total) for CEU students, plus $150 for materials. Registration costs for other study options vary.
