Concordia Theological Seminary will present its annual symposia on exegetical and confessional theology Jan. 20-23 on its campus in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The four-day symposia includes:
the 24th Annual Symposium on Exegetical Theology, Jan. 20-21, which will discuss “The Coherence of the Sacred Scriptures.”
the 32nd Annual Symposium on the Lutheran Confessions, Jan. 21-23, which will focus on “A Last Look at Missouri’s Critical Time: The 1950s to 1970s.”
Scheduled presentations and speakers include:
“The Big Bang and the Book of Amos” by Dr. R. Reed Lessing, professor of exegetical theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
“Out of Step or Before His Times: Berthold von Schenk” by Rev. Paul Robert Sauer, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church, the Bronx, N.Y., and associate editor of Lutheran Forum.
“Goal, Malady, Means as Law-Gospel Ersatz in the Theology of Richard R. Caemmerer” by Dr. David R. Schmitt, professor of homiletics at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
“A Pilgrimage not Taken: Arthur Carl Piepkorn” by Dr. Philip J. Secker, director of The Arthur Carl Piepkorn Center for Evangelical Catholicity.
“Has Diversity in the Scriptures Been Overemphasized? Listening to the Coherent Witness of the ‘Goodly Fellowship of Prophets'” by Dr. Christopher R. Seitz, research professor of biblical interpretation, Wycliffe College, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.
“Dr. Walter A. Maier as Evangelical Preacher” by Dr. Richard J. Shuta, professor of theology at Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Mich.
“A Pilgrim from Wittenberg to Constantinople: Jaroslav Pelikan” by Dr. Robert L. Wilken, religious studies professor at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va.
Paper copies of the speakers’ presentations will not be distributed, but will be available online.
Prior to the symposia series, on Jan. 19, the seminary will offer a Lenten Preaching Seminar designed to help pastors prepare sermons and guide liturgical planning for divine services, weekly services, and Holy Week and Easter worship. The seminar, titled “Dear Christians One and All Rejoice,” will be led by Rev. John T. Pless, assistant professor of pastoral ministry and missions and director of field education at Concordia Theological Seminary.
Registration for the seminar is $30.
Registration for the entire symposia series is $130. Participants also may register only for the Exegetical Theology Symposium ($65) or the Symposium on Lutheran Confessions ($98). Meals and lodging are extra.
