Record number of Servant Events set (Part 1)

A record 100-plus LCMS Servant Events will take place over the coming months, through next summer.

LCMS Youth Ministry co-sponsors Servant Events — as it has for more than 1,000 such events since 1981 — along with Synod congregations and schools, as well as related camps and social-service agencies.

The Synod office provides Bible studies and devotions for those events, for which the 2009 theme is “Receive as Gift,” based on 1 Peter 4:10. Written by Matthew Jung, a Lutheran teacher in Columbus, Ind., the studies will first be used at leadership training sessions for Servant Event leaders this month in St. Louis.

As the November Reporter went to press, the Servant Events listed at the end of this story — arranged in chronological order by date — had openings for additional participants.

Each listing also provides the name of the event’s co-sponsor, as well as its location and title. For more information about a particular event, contact the event coordinator via the e-mail address given at the end of each entry.

To search for a Servant Event by type, date, or region, or to see a list of all the upcoming Servant Events (including those that are filled), go to www.lcms.org/youth.

“Participants learn that serving others can make a difference because of Jesus Christ,” said Jim Lohman, associate director of LCMS Youth Ministry for Youth Gatherings and Servant Events.

Lohman noted that Servant Events cover a broad range of experiences including construction, human care, outreach, environmental care, and family events; and often take place in multicultural settings.

“Servant Event participants have made a difference in the lives of thousands of others,”  Lohman said.
