Campus Ministry offers 'Texas Underground,' other events

LCMS Campus Ministry is offering several events for students, ministry leaders, faculty and staff from colleges and universities nationwide.

  • “Texas Underground,” Jan. 2-7 in San Antonio, is a six-day “servant-outreach gathering” conducted in partnership with Can-Do Missions and Acts 1:8 Mission Society, two mission organizations located in Austin, Texas, and St. Louis, respectively.

“Our hope is to capture the spirit of so-called ‘underground’ churches around the world whose members throughout history have risked skepticism and criticism, among other things, to put their Christian faith into action,” said Jon Jensen, executive director of LCMS Campus Ministry.

The event will offer participants “opportunities to roll up their sleeves and reach out to others through acts of service and faith-sharing,” Jensen said.

The registration fee of $245 includes meals, lodging, a T-shirt and building materials.  Deadline for registrations is Dec. 1.

  • A “2010 Video Contest” offers campus ministries an opportunity to share their group’s “response to God’s love and power in your campus community.”

There is no charge to submit a video, but it must be no longer than four minutes.  Prizes of $500 and $250 will be awarded to the ministries that submit the top two videos, as selected by an LCMS Campus Ministry panel of judges.

The contest is open from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31.

  • “Student Mission Challenge,” Sept. 24-26 in St. Louis, is a training event for student leaders who “have a heart for living their faith and for leading in their college ministry so that more students come to know Christ and grow spiritually.”

Registration is $50 by Sept. 14, or $60 after that date, and includes meals and lodging.

  • The “BikeWalkRun-Athon” is intended to raise awareness and support for LCMS campus ministries nationwide.  Individual campus ministries are invited to hold their own BikeWalkRun-Athons between Oct. 1 and Nov. 15, and LCMS Campus Ministry will manage registration and donations.

“The job of local ministries will be to host great local events, build community and goodwill — and have some fun,” Jensen said.

“And don’t forget about Campus Ministry Sunday” on Nov. 28, he said. “Every congregation can participate and show their support for this vital ministry in our church.”
