Concordia Publishing House has released a new addition to its Concordia Commentary series — Matthew 11:2-20:34, a second volume on the Gospel of Matthew. The first volume, Matthew 1:1-11:1, was released in 2006
Both editions were written by Dr. Jeffrey A. Gibbs, professor and chairman of the Department of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
The latest volume, Matthew 11:2-20:34, offers insights into the middle chapters of Matthew, which focus on the identity of Jesus, His parables and miracles, His three Passion predictions and “the sign of Jonah,” Jesus’ transfiguration, and His teaching about marriage and divorce.
Themes that receive particular emphasis in both volumes include Jesus’ mission to save His people from their sins; the reign of God in Jesus; the Son of God’s vicarious role as the substitute for Israel and for us; Jesus’ fulfillment of the Old Testament; Jesus’ mighty ministry of the Word (preaching, calling disciples, teaching) and deed (healing the sick, exorcizing demons and raising the dead); how God’s grace in Jesus now comes to us through Word and Sacrament; and eschatology — that the end times have begun already with Jesus’ ministry, and thus the Christian lives with joyful hope in the promises yet to be fulfilled on the Last Day.
The Concordia Commentary volumes are designed to help pastors and teachers of the Word to proclaim the Gospel with “greater insight, clarity and faithfulness to the divine intent of the biblical text,” according to CPH.
Gibbs told Reporter he is “grateful to God for the chance to try and offer support to pastors and teachers of the Word, and specifically the Gospel according to Matthew.”
